Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is just around the corner, and that means it’s almost time for spring cleaning. This is a popular time of year for making positive changes in both your home and your life. Spring cleaning gives you the opportunity to declutter, get organized, and detox your home.

Here are a few ways to create a healthier environment for you and your family this spring.

  1. Start with De-Cluttering. Our homes, particularly our bathrooms, are full of items we don’t use. Go through your bathroom and discard expired cosmetics and beauty products. It’s also a good idea to replace batteries and update your first aid kits. If you have children, chances are you’ll be using first aids kits a lot more in the coming months. You should also take a look at items around your entire home. If something is no longer functional, re-purpose it or remove it. Use this as a time for thrift store donations or hand-me-downs.
  2. Air out your home. One of the easiest and best ways to bring a natural and clean feeling to your home is to simply air it out. This will flow out toxins and rejuvenate your home in a completely natural way. The best part: All you need to do is open the window!
  3. Air-dry your laundry. During spring cleaning, you might be taking the time to wash many larger items like blankets and comforters. Find a clothesline and air dry these if possible.
  4. Cleaning your furniture. Use a combination of olive oil and lemon essential oil to clean and polish your wood furniture. This cleaner produces a shiny and pleasant smelling finish.
  5. Always Work from Top to Bottom. This will force dirt downward and keep you from having to re-dust or re-clean your space. If you have a vacuum with a long extension hose, use it to get cobwebs and dust from your ceilings and fans. Then dust your furniture and other items before vacuuming all the dust from your floors.
  6. WINDOWS AND DRAPES. Depending on the material, you may be able to just vacuum these guys, but check the label to be sure. For really stinky drapes, it’s best to hand wash them in cold water.
  7. BEHIND AND UNDERNEATH FURNITURE. Scoot that sofa to the side and you’ll probably uncover a secret world of dust and dirt. As you clean, keep an eye out for loose change between those cushions, too!
  8. AIR FILTERS. Changing your air filters regularly will prolong the life of your furnace and keep the air you breathe free from dust and allergens. Plus, it only takes about five minutes!
  9. MOLD AND SOAP SCUM. Mold is most common in dark, moist areas such as your bathrooms, basement and attic. To kill mold and soap scum, mix a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide!
  10. MATTRESSES. Flipping your mattresses will prolong their life by distributing the wear. Flip your mattresses over so the top becomes the bottom, and turn them so the foot becomes the head.
  11. REFRIGERATOR. Banish bacteria and prevent food poisoning by clearing out your fridge. Toss anything that’s rotten, expired or questionable. Tip: Keep things fresh with a box of baking soda!
  12. DRYER DUCT. Lint builds up in your dryer duct throughout the year, and can create a serious fire hazard if it’s not cleared. Make sure you clean both the duct and the exterior vent!
